Commissioning Engineer for Australia’s first large-scale waste to energy plant

Job title: Commissioning Engineer for Australia’s first large-scale waste to energy plant

Company: Ramboll

Job description: Ramboll is seeking an experienced commissioning engineer for Australia’s first large-scale waste to energy plant!

Background of the project

Avertas Energy is Australia’s first large-scale Energy from Waste facility under construction in Kwinana, south of Perth. Once operational in late 2022, the facility will recover resources and energy from 400,000 tonnes per annum of municipal and commercial & industrial waste diverted from landfilling and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 200,000 tonnes per annum. Additionally, enough electricity will be generated to power 50,000 homes in the Perth area.

The project vehicle, Avertas Energy, is owned by Macquarie Capital and the Dutch Infrastructure Fund (DIF). The project is supported by the government via funding/grants from CEFC and ARENA. More information about the project can be found here:

Since 2014, Ramboll has provided consultancy services to the Kwinana Waste-to-Energy Project. During the manufacturing, construction, commissioning and testing phases, Ramboll is the Owner’s Engineer and is responsible for ensuring that the facility meets all local and contractual requirements and incorporates lessons learned and best practices from other Waste to Energy facilities around the world. Ramboll will also oversee the performance testing and commissioning of the facility and transfer to commercial operations.

Ramboll is an international consultancy having +16,000 staff worldwide and is a world leader in Energy from Waste with +160 reference plants globally. Ramboll is present in Australia with offices in Perth, Sydney and Hunter. We are working with other WtE projects in Australia like the Western Sydney Waste to Energy project. Your responsibility as Commissioning Engineer

You will be reporting to the Ramboll Project Manager on site at the Kwinana Facility and you will be responsible for providing Avertas with oversight of 3rd party contractors involved in the commissioning and testing of the facility.

You will be liaising with our Client Avertas Energy’s management team, with the EPC Contractor Acciona and with the O&M Contractor Veolia beside our own team at site and in the back-office in Copenhagen. You will work closely with the Project Manager and Site Engineers to coordinate the team’s involvement in commissioning activities.

It is ultimately your responsibility to secure that the plant meets all requirements of the commissioning and testing phases and to liaise with your counterparts to get issues resolved in order to secure commercial operation of the facility.

You and your competencies

Please note that only candidates with relevant Waste to Energy commissioning experience will be considered.

We imagine the successful candidate to have experience managing or coordinating commissioning activities at large complex processing facilities. We expect that you have a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant waste to energy and commissioning experience.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate is:

  • An excellent communicator and problem solver with a targeted focus on producing solutions and has a strong character not afraid to handle opposition when challenges arise.
  • Proactive and flexible and thrives in an independent job. Your tasks will demand a great ability to keep a sense of perspective, a structured approach to your work as well as the ability to see something through;
  • A team player and cooperation with colleagues from other areas of the business comes natural to you;
  • Comfortable in speaking and writing English at a high professional level. You especially have strong verbal skills, as you will convey and communicate technical information to colleagues, the Client and the EPC contractor.

It is important that you can see problems and issues from the Owner’s perspective, and you know how and what to prioritize when times get hectic.

The opportunity and time of start

You will be employed at the facility location in Kwinana, south of Perth on a project-based contract (for the duration of the commissioning and testing phase which is approximately 9-12 months). With the increasing number of Energy from Waste projects in Asia/Pacific and Australia there may be opportunity to continue working for Ramboll on a permanent basis especially if you are willing to travel/relocate.

Planned start date is 1 November 2021.
