Job description: Overall purpose of role

The EMEA Private Banking team offers bespoke banking and investment solutions to high net worth clients in various international locations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Barclays private bankers act as trusted advisors to clients providing bespoke banking services, lending and wealth structuring, in addition to a world class range of investment solutions and products across all asset classes.

The Head of Middle-East & Africa (Switzerland) role will combine the activities of the day-to-day management and supervision of a team of Private Bankers, including hiring and induction, mid and full year performance reviews, compensation decisions and day to day coaching of staff, with the production expectations of a Senior Private Banker.

Key Accountabilities

The proportion of time spent on personal production as opposed to managerial duties will vary considerably day-to-day. On average the balance will be two-thirds production and one-third managerial, with performance objectives and compensation weighted accordingly. This will also vary depending on team size. The Head of Middle-East & Africa (Switzerland) will have both managerial and banker Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), and will manage a group of PB’s who will each have individual KPI’s and business targets, and their own independent book of business. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the below:

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of PBs to achieve organisational goals in defined markets and locations;
  • Ensure team conforms with global and market standards of client service, regulatory compliance, T&C, KYC, product delivery and operating model;
  • Ensure clear communication to the team of wider business objectives, including Location and Market goals as appropriate;
  • Make a demonstrable contribution to development of new and emerging talent within PB&OS and other areas of Barclays as appropriate, as well as the development of the immediate team members through coaching.

Business and Sales Management

  • Achieve team asset, revenue and margin targets as well as demonstrating effective cost discipline.

New Business Origination/CRM

Acquire, develop and service relationships with a range of UHNW clients, and ensure that the respective banking teams develop new and existing banking relationships, concentrating (but not exhaustively) on the below points:

  • Identify, develop and secure new relationships through personal and client referrals, Barclays group internal networks and corporate and investment banking sources;
  • Achieve personal targets for assets and revenues (as per the Key Performance Indicators agreed on an annual basis);
  • Make a demonstrable contribution to referring relevant business to other parts of Barclays;
  • Maintain highest levels of service and delivery to existing clients at all times;
  • Key contact for all banking and credit advice and client queries;
  • Key interface between clients and other parts of Barclays.

Investment Advice and Financial Solutions

Provide innovative and world class financial solutions to meet client needs including:

  • Investment Management: Offers a range of services depending on client demands, including modelled, bespoke, discretionary and advisory portfolios. Investment Management works closely with the Private Bankers to provide a holistic service to clients;
  • Balance Sheet: Offers Banking, Credit and FX products to support a wide range of clients borrowing needs including finance for property and luxury purchases;
  • Alternative Investments: Offers UHNW clients exposure to hedge funds, private equity, commodities and real estate;
  • Enables UHNW clients to access products and services traditionally available only to institutional clients.

Performance Management

  • Instil a high performance culture across the team, with a particular emphasis on excellence in sales management process and activity ;
  • In conjunction with relevant Location and Market Heads, the Head of Middle-East & Africa (Switzerland)will agree overall performance objectives for each team member, and carry out regular monthly reviews with all team members covering activities, asset accumulation, revenue production and other objectives as required;
  • Formally supervise the activities of the PBs within the team, including mid and full year performance reviews, compensation and promotion decisions, and hiring and induction of new staff.

Governance and Control

  • Demonstrate leadership and ownership for maintaining the highest possible standards of risk management, compliance and governance within your team by ensuring individuals engage and operate in accordance with:
  • Regulatory requirements in relevant local jurisdictions
  • Barclays Policies, Procedures and principles of governance
  • Barclays Training & Competency framework
  • Perform supervision and oversight of client facing staff using management tool. This should focus on due diligence for client on-boarding, ongoing client relationship mgmt and annual client reviews, client order execution, complaints handling as well as identifying training requirements;
  • Understand, embed and ensure team conformance with global and market standards of client service, regulatory compliance, T&C, KYC, product delivery and operating model;
  • With an operational approach, work with Business Delivery to ensure effective risk control and supervision of the commercial sales budgets, plans and figures;
  • Actively challenge and proactively introduce ways in which to reduce the number and impact of risk events in the team;

Role requirements

Professional/technical experience

  • Excellent relationship management skills with experience of managing and handling the sophisticated client needs of individuals and families;
  • Experience of building a client base using internal and external networks;
  • Highly effective in gaining an in-depth understanding of client’s needs and advising on a diverse range of wealth management solutions;
  • Satisfies local regulatory criteria;
  • Broad experience of the financial services industry, particularly in the areas of retail regulated products and services to high net worth customers and asset management;
  • Demonstrable abilities in supervising and managing professional staff in a financial services environment;
  • Proven ability to establish and sustain clear operational process for teams of people that relate to successful achievement of agreed KPIs;
  • Understands talent agenda and actively works to continuously improve the quality of the team through rigorous performance management, as well as sourcing of new talent;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide coaching to staff on an individual and team level.
